Chelsea to Bid for Inter Milan Goalkeeper Andre Onana

Written by

Chelsea is preparing to make a bid for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer as they look to upgrade their goalkeeping department with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy having had an underwhelming season. The 27-year-old has been a regular feature in the Nerazzurri’s defense this season as they made their way to the Champions League semi-final. And his agent insists that the Cameroonian is happy at the San Siro.

Goalkeeper

Chelsea is reportedly prioritizing a move to sign Andre Onana as their new first-choice goalkeeper in the summer. The Cameroonian is a highly-regarded option and would be able to easily usurp Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy from their No.1 spot.

The Blues are looking to trim their squad as they prepare for life without Romelu Lukaku and would be willing to offer either Kepa or Mendy in a swap deal. They are also interested in Brentford’s David Raya, Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Inter is said to be reluctant to sell Onana but will allow him to leave if a substantial bid is offered in the summer. The former Ajax shot-stopper joined the Nerazzurri last summer on a free transfer but has quickly established himself as their No 1 and is one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A. Tuttosport suggests that Onana could be available for around EUR 60 million.

Attacking midfielder

The 27-year-old Cameroonian has been the star man between the sticks for Inter Milan this season and his impressive performances have caught the eye of Chelsea. He would be a huge boost to their goalkeeping options as Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy are both out of favor at Stamford Bridge.

Onana’s contract expires in the summer and he is available on a free transfer. Serie A champions Inter want a big profit on the former Ajax goalkeeper, who joined last summer on a Bosman deal and is willing to accept offers of around EUR40 million.

Chelsea are interested in signing Onana but they would likely need to offer one of their players, such as Trevoh Chalobah or Ruben Loftus-Cheek, as part of the deal. The Blues have already established contact with Onana but they will not rush into a move as their major PS600 million spending spree has left them on the brink of Financial Fair Play.

Defender

The Blues are keen to make a move for Onana as they look to upgrade their goalkeeping options in the summer. They view the 27-year-old as their ideal new number one with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy not considering long-term options for Chelsea.

The Cameroonian is strong with his feet and sprays the ball out from the back, and would give Chelsea a much-needed boost this season. The Blues have also reportedly been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Brentford’s David Raya.

However, Give Me Sports suggests that Onana is the favoured option of incoming manager, Mauricio Pochettino. The former Tottenham boss is set to take charge at Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis this summer. He has already outlined his plans to bring in new players with several senior members of the current squad at risk of moving on. Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are the most likely to be among those to leave West London.

Forward

According to GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs, Chelsea has already contacted the representative of Onana in order to sound out a move to Stamford Bridge. However, the talks are in their early stages and nothing seems to have advanced at this point.

The Cameroon international would be a good fit for the Blues as they prepare to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy in the summer. But Onana isn’t going to be willing to move unless he is guaranteed the No.1 jersey at the club.

Onana made his first big save of the game shortly after half-time when he read Sandro Tonali’s pull-back cross and dived to his left to gather. It was the first time that Onana had to make such a challenge since joining Inter. But the goalkeeper did it superbly, parrying away Brahim Diaz’s first-time side-footed effort. Then, a few minutes later, Rafael Leao burst into the penalty area and looked set to score but his resulting shot was blocked by the keeper.
